"Spice Up Your Life" was the first single to be released from the then upcoming album "Spiceworld", released on 13th October 1997. The single was a big hit worldwide, in the US it went gold (over 500,000 copies sold), and in the UK it went platinum, selling 821,100 copies in total. The single was originally due to be released a week earlier, but Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" and its phenomenal success forced the Spice Girls put the single back a week, in order to have a better chance to get to #1. When released, with no great surprise, the single knocked Elton John off of the top, with sales of 321,000 in its first week, although it only spent one week on the top spot - the first Spice Girls single to do so. "Spice Up Your Life" was the perfect launch-pad for "Spiceworld",
and it spent 15 weeks inside the UK Top 75, becoming the 46th best selling single of the 1990s.
